General
When is the trip?
Thursday, February 19 through Sunday, February 22, 2009.

Where are we going to be going?
We will be staying and skiing at Copper Mountain Resort.

How are we going to get there?
Tranportation is all going to be of the carpool variety with plans of leaving Denver by mid-afternoon Thursday. Parking is limited, so we want to keep the number of vehicles to a minimum. Drivers will be reimbured for gas.

Transportation
What if I don’t live in Colorado?
That’s cool. In fact, you’re the ones we’re focusing on most as we plan this trip. Locals are able to go skiing any time they want. That being said, you’re still responsible for getting yourself here, whether that be by plane, train, or automobile. We recommend looking at Frontier Airlines first. They're a Denver-based airline and are generally the cheapest airline option.

What do I need to take into consideration when booking a flight (or other transportation)?
Please try to arrive by early afternoon on Thursday. Volunteers will be driving throughhout the day to pick you up from the airport. If you absolutely can't get in until late, let us know and we'll work out what tranportation option we can. Plan on departing Sunday late afternoon or evening. Once again, there will be volunteers able to drive you to the airport. If you can't or don't want to get a flight out until after Sunday, you will have to arrange your own overnight plans.

Lodging
What’s lodging going to be like?
As of right now we have our usual 5-bedroom (Masters) house and 4-bedroom (Legends) townhouse about a block apart at the base of the mountain in the East Village. If we fill those we will look into booking other places.

How much is that going to cost?
Staying in the Masters is $310/person for all three nights. Staying in the Legends is $240/person for all three nights. Those prices also cover gas for the drivers of the carpool and some meal costs on top of the lodging.

What if I’m not going to be staying all three nights?
To keep things fair and easy for everyone, we’re making the lodging costs a flat fee. So you’re responsible for paying all three nights, even if you’re not going to stay them.

What if I just want to come hang with everyone for an evening?
That's perfectly alright. But when the party's over, as they say: "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."

When will I have to pay for that?
There's no hard deadline, but those prices will go up by 15% after Oct. 31 to help cover late bookings and other similar issues. Also, space is on a first-paid, first-given basis. If one of the houses or the whole trip in general fills up, you'll be out of luck.

Skiing
How much are lift tickets?
We've secured two Copper Mountain day lift passes for everyone. They are $40 each. So $80 for two days of skiing.

What if I want to ski somewhere else one day?
Then you will be responsible for getting yourself from Copper to that mountain and buying your own lift ticket--which will run you a lot more (approx. $70-$80 minimum) than what we’ve been able to get for you at Copper.

Are you including ski/snowboard equipment rentals?
No. You’ll be in charge of that on your own. Rentals are pretty reasonably priced, however. Usually about $15/day for standard skis, $30/day for performance. Boarding packages usually run about $10 more. Christy Sports is our preferred rental location. You can get a little bit of a discount by going to their site and getting the paperwork out of the way early.

Should I rent my equipment before we get there?
That's not recommended. First, it’s that much more gear to haul up, making transportation more difficult. Second, you’d have to rent for three days since you wouldn’t be able to return the equipment until the end of the trip. If you rent on the mountain you only have to rent on the days you ski/board.

I have my own equipment, though. Can I bring it?
Of course. Just let us know if this is the case, as it will help us to better plan transportation.

What kind of clothing will I need?
The answer to this is too long for a FAQ page. Read this LJ post for details.

Food
What about food?
For dinners we typically order pizza on Thursday night, have a home-cooked dinner on Friday, and go out to Breckenridge on Saturday. Breakfasts are also often cooked by volunteers. Other than that, you are on your own for food. We recommend you buy your own snacks and lunches and take advantage of the kitchens in the houses. Food prices in the cafeterias on the mountain can border on ridiculous...you’ll easily spend $12 for a single lunch. And that’s if you don’t eat a whole lot. There will likely be an arranged grocery run at some point on Thursday to help out.

So how much should I budget for that?
Breakfasts and dinners (except Breck) are covered in the lodging fees. Dinner in Breck will run an average of $50, but can be more or less depending on where you decide to eat. As for the rest of your food...that’s up to you and how much you want to buy at the store or eat on the mountain.

Wrap-up

Sure.
  • Lodging + gas + 5 meals - $310/$240

  • Equipment rentals - ~$30
  • Lunches/snacks/Breck Dinner - ~$80
